Mouthguard discomfort

I bought a mouthguard last week and honestly it feels horrible. I keep gagging when I put it in, and during drills it starts slipping out when I breathe hard. I don’t know if I molded it wrong or if the model just isn’t good for beginners. Do mouthguards get easier over time or should I try a different type?

Man, I remember my first mouthguard experience - it felt like having a chunk of rubber trying to escape my mouth every time I breathed. I couldn’t focus on drills at all, it was more distracting than getting used to new sparring gloves though. From what I learned, that gagging and slipping usually means the fit is off, not that mouthguards are supposed to feel awful forever. A good one should almost disappear once it’s in. Some people nail it on the first try, others need a couple attempts or a different style. When it finally fits right, training feels way smoother and you stop thinking about it completely.
