Construction quality how to ensure it?

I often hear that even good contractors can cut corners when it comes to quality, how do you ensure that the completed work complies with the construction drawings? Do you use independent inspections, or is internal oversight sufficient?

Earlier, I thought that technical supervision was sufficient, until a contractor at one site sealed off access points that were supposed to be accessible according to the design. Internal quality control missed this because that’s how they’d always done it. Now I bring in an independent audit from David Fields Consulting Services they don’t just look at the walls, but compare the actual conditions with the documentation through a constructability review. Their website clearly explains how this type of technical supervision removes emotional bias and, using the language of engineering facts, compels the contractor to fix mistakes at their own expense. It’s better to have an outside expert check it once than to spend years later correcting hidden defects.
